Old wives’ tales to predict baby’s gender
If you’re trying to guess your baby’s gender, these old wives’ tales are a fun, non-scientific way. Before you read on, it’s important to remember that gender is a fluid spectrum, no matter what sex your baby is assigned at birth, this may not match their actual gender.
As soon as you find out you're pregnant, it’s hard not to wonder if your bump is home to a baby boy or baby girl. For centuries, people have been attempting to predict the gender of their baby using myths, stories and urban legends. The only accurate way to find out your baby’s gender is from your doctor; as early as 10 weeks via a blood test, or at your anatomy ultrasound. In the meantime, or if you decide to keep baby’s gender as a surprise, why not take a 50, 50 guess at the sex of your baby using some entertaining old wives’ tales for assistance!
We also have a free print out game of the old wives’ tales to predict baby’s gender that you can download below. This is a fun activity to do at your baby shower.
The garlic test
If you can stomach a lot of garlic, but not smell it, according to urban legend you’re carrying a girl!
How you’re carrying and your bump shape
If your belly hangs low and you’re carrying wide, urban legend has said you are having a baby boy. Up high near your rib cage and sticking straight out and you’re having a girl!
Sweet versus salty cravings
You could be having a girl if you’re craving sweet food. Cravings for salty or protein rich food, could mean you’re expecting a baby boy.
Morning sickness as an indicator
Morning sickness is one of the first signs you are pregnant, but the severity of it can also indicate your baby's gender. They say if you are particularly ill, this could indicate to you having a girl. Little to no morning sickness has been associated with having a baby boy.
Your skin, hair and nails
According to urban legend, you can thank your baby boy for giving you the best skin you’ve ever had; we call that pregnancy glow! Baby girls are said to “steal their mother’s beauty” leaving mum’s skin dry and acne prone. The same goes for your hair and nails; if you have brittle and thin hair, a baby girl is to blame.
The ring test
Tie a ring to a piece of string, lay down and get someone to hold it over the top of your belly. Watch to see if the ring swings from side to side (indicator you are having a girl). If it spins in a circle you are having a boy.
Your sleep position
Are you sleeping on your right side? This points to having a baby girl.
Craving citrus food?
Apparently if you are having citrus cravings, it means you are having a girl!
As we said up top, these old wive’s tales have never proven to be true, they are speculation passed down the generations. Speak to your doctor first most and always!
